The white french christmas tree

Happy new year!

As we spent christmas in Paris, we did not invest in a tree here in Stockholm (one could also add that there is basically no space in our small studio). So I decided to show you the one my mum did in Paris.

As you can notice, it is white, my mum likes the white ones because you don't get a mess in turn of the tree when it gets old (and you can keep it longer). Look it's very technical, what you see at the bottom, is actually a bag, they will use it when they throw it away.

Ok now I have to say that when I was a kid, I was the boss in what concerns the christmas tree, and we would always buy a huuuge green one, which would touch the ceiling! There was no other way possible... ;)

Swedish Xmas tree x 2

I spent Christmas at Stefan's parents' place, where I told my mother-in-law-to-be that they had to decorate the tree nicely because I was going to use it as an example of Swedish Xmas tree to my friends from abroad. This made her put me, Stefan and his sister at the task ... However, I think we did a decent job and I had several photos of the tree, from different angles and in different lighting; preparing for the posting on the blog.

Then I forgot my SLR at Stefan's parents' place. They live 220 kilometers from Linköping, and 350 kilometers from Stockholm ...

So, my camera is still in Lidköping, with the photos of the tree on the memory card. Me and my camera miss each other.

Luckily, I photographed my parents'-in-law-to-be Xmas tree last year, and at my own parents'. So, here are two Swedish Xmas trees: the first one is Stefan's parents' (a real spruce) and the second one is my parents' (an artificial tree, less scent, less needles). Xmas balls, little Xmas decorations and tiny wrapped gifts together with glitter. Very Svensson-Swedish as we say in Sweden, Svensson being the most common surname in Sweden.

Ok, I am going to be the first, so here is a photo of our fur tree, I took it just before we started to celebrate Christmas on the 24 Dec.

By the way, we call the evening of the 24 Dec, so Christmas Eve, Saint Eve in Hungarian.

We traditionally have these very colourful trees =) A very special thing we put on the tree is called "szaloncukor", which I could translate as "saloon sugar/sweets". This is usually some kind of candy-filled chocolate wrapped into white paper, and then into some metal coloured foil. You can have it in various tastes, and we all looooove them. The most traditional is filled with some kind of fruit-tasted jelly. You can read a bit more about it on this wiki site.

We also put some chocolate on the tree, these have various shapes, e.g. Santa Claus, mushroom, bell, cube-shaped presents, etc. We also put glass-balls on it, but that is widely used all over the world. And we also put these colourful lights on it, as well as some candles and small sparklers which kids like a lot.

Usually presents are placed under the tree.... parents prepare the tree, and kids only see it in the evening, and they are all supposed to think that the presents are brought to them by Jesus Christ, and they usually write letters to him where they ask for certain presents. So Santa Claus is left out from our Christmas, but he brings sweets and chocolate to children on the 6 Dec, and puts all those into their shoes.

Ok, and now something else. Here is an interesting article about global warming, and how a whole island disappeared thanks to it.

Stefy and Fabio arrived very late in the evening yesterday and Tomi picked them up at the airport while I was in my bed with some stupid flew, or probably I ate some really bad food, just don't know yet ;))) Anyway, feeling much better now, Helena, Jess & JC are arriving around 11am, and Gio and his girlf in the afternoon.
Plenty of sunshine, you aaaaall gonna love it.

The other day I wanted to post a really long message about my relationship with all this HIV/AIDS/Africa situation but the whole post disappeared when I wanted to save it, so you will have to wait for it as now I really have to work. Every body has seen a map of the World, but do you really know the planet where you live? Preeti, Tania, Raimundas (my colleague) and I had an interesting discussion about maps. especially the rectangular ones, obtained by projection.

Arno Peters, a historian, devised a map based on Gall's orthographic projection in 1967, presented it in 1973 as a 'new invention', and promoted it as a superior alternative to the Mercator projection, a much older projection suitable for navigation which increasingly inflates the sizes of regions according to their distance from the equator. The Mercator inflation results, for example, in a representation of Greenland that is larger than Africa, whereas in reality Africa is 13 times as large. In contrast, the Gall-Peters projection shows areas of equal size on the globe as also equal size on the map. Since much of the underdeveloped world lies in or near the tropics, those countries appear smaller on a Mercator, and therefore, in Peters's theory, less significant. By using his "new" projection, disadvantaged nations could be restored to their rightful proportions. This argument was picked up by many educational and religious bodies, leading to adoption of the Gall-Peters projection amongst some socially concerned groups.

Dear friends,

I think you will be happy about already having left Stockholm now. IT IS SNOWING!!!! As I am a winter/snow/christmas fascist I am simply happy about this. However, I still feel a bit jealous of you Italians - going to the beach and all, while I am just struggeling against the wind.

This is what I woke up to this morning. And it is starting to blow and snow more now. I just hope it will stay that way and not just melt away.

This picture is taken prior to last weeks "miniature storm". It was really cool. The sky was all black, it was blowing like hell, but still the sun shone trough from somewhere and lit all the roof tops.

Time for me to run to work. Erlang course! Halleluja!

Guys, this is propaganda =) No, seriously, I went to the pictures yesterday, and I saw a nice film, and it is very relevant as it is about the Revolution '56 we had in Hungary between 23 Oct and 4 Nov, 1956. So if you're interested in Hungarian history, love, and water polo you should go for it.

I must admit it has a touch of Hollywood in it thanks to the producer, Andy Vajna, who is Hungarian, and fled the country in 1956 early in his teens to the US. The writer of the original story, Joe Esterhas, is also Hungarian but he lives abroad as well. At the same time the actors are all from Hungary and you can see most of the current Hungarian National Waterpolo Team cause they also act in the movie. Great, muscular guys =))) LOL.

PS: In 1956 Hungary was ruled by a communist government and we had huge Russian pressure, we can call itt oppression. At the same time the Russian army was constantly in the country. Around the 23 Oct university students (Muszaki Egyetem = Budapest Technical University, ie my uni =) started to go on strike and protest against the current govt and wanted Russians leave the country (Ruszkik haza! = Russians home!). There were riots and they got some guns and seemingly the govt resigned and "reformist communist" Imre Nagy became the president, and at the same the the Russian tanks left the country. But not terminally =( they came back soon, and on 4 Nov they defeated the revolution, killing some thousands of people.

Imre Nagy left the Varsaw Pact so Hungary officially became a neutral country which made people believe in American troops would defend us from Russians. However, just at that time Israel attacked Egypt (the Suez Crisis) and Americans were more interested in that crisis than our little revolt against CCCP. Well. No comment on that. Ridiculously, in Jan 1957, the man of the year for 1956 in Time magazine became "The Hungarian Patriot".

Communism continued until 1989, though it "melted" that is to say became a little more liberal, but nothing like democracy. You _had_ to go and vote but there was only one party to vote for. You could go abroad but just for a limited period of time, and the amount of foreign currency you were allowed to buy was limited. A lot of people fled the country... There were at the same time a lot of spies of the communist, I mean, Hungarian communists, and a lot of people were taken and killed by the "police" of the communism.

Wow, this became quite long =))) Anyway, the movie is really nice.

It's amazing...this year the summer seems to last forever...Last weekend we had 30 degrees again, so I decided to take the very last bath of the season.

This is the beach...it's amazing because a lot of people were there. We italians go crazy for the sun and the sea!

This is incredible. Fucking unbelievable! Do you know what I just realised when I was out with JC yesterday and Jessica sent me an sms telling me that she just booked her tickets for the 8th and 10th for the Budapest weekend?

"But wait a sec, weren't we going on the 7th?"

And yes, I have by mistake - for some stupid reason - booked a ticket for the morning flight on Thursday the 7th. MERDE!!! :-)

I'll see what they say at Malev today... But I will almost certainly have to pay the 50 euros for changing the tickets. Oh well, what you don't keep in your head... Pay up dear!

Remember we wanted to go to the pictures and probably watch Volver? And then we realized that it is in Spanish with Swedish subtitles so a great many of us would not understand it at all? Yesterday evening I met my very best friend and we went to see the movie, and Helena, you are so right, it is a terrific film. I really liked it. So anyone who is up for a european movie should go and see it.

When I took a taxi back home I was just staring out of the window and Budapest seemed more beautiful then ever, I saw the streets I haven't seen for a couple of weeks, and it was cold (not in the taxi =), and simple. I love it sooo much. And then when I was quite close to my house the radio started to play Everything I Do (I Do It For You) from Bryan Adams.... jeez, I miss you guys, and remember the crazy dancing we did at the Bryan Adams concert? All jumping up while everybody around us was just standing and applauding? And screeming out 'Bryan' and 'biiii-jun-tah'?

This week end we went out in the archipelago of Stockholm to relax and just do nothing, a phone/Computer/Internet-less experience (weird!), and I was wondering what you guys would be doing during the week end, if a lot of msn would be going on, etc.

I have to tell you I am very proud of us, because we have reached the 5Go objective on the ftp. I think we could compete for the best documented trainee program! ;)

I miss you all already, was weird to not spend time with you during the week end, looking forward to seeing you again!

...that time has passed this quickly! I miss you already, and can't wait for March. It's funny how the summer seemed to stay for just a little bit longer when you guys were here. Now autumn is definitely here - it's windy and grey and leaves are blowing everywhere.

I hope you already know this but I wanted to say it again: I really love you guys and I am so happy to have got to know each and everyone of you. I have learnt incredibly much these weeks and a lot of it thanks to you!

20 weeks to go dear all. I just counted the weeks, and March 3, Sat, is exactly 20 weeks from now. Not so much, I'd say. Hope that all of you got home safe, are now surrounded by your families and friends =) As for me, my parents just went for cycling for the whole day today, my little sis is somewhere with his boy so i am totally alone. But, and that is what I just told Helena (btw, I love the Swedish pronounciation of your name, sg I have never told you before), I really need some time to be alone, some me time, time to reflect. Reflect on everything.

And the music is great, JC, i am just listening to the soundtrack of 5x2. Perfect.

Oh, and I have already fetched my Italian grammar books and still looking for the French ones =) 20 weeks give me enough time to practice, you know.

Hi everyone! I really have to upload these pictures... last week Fabio and I met Preeti and Guha (I hope I spelled it correctly!) in Roma... the first real GGP meeting for me! It's been just great, I'm sure we are gonna have a fantastic time in Stockholm... especially when I'll cook a Tiramisù for you, it's a lot better than the one you had in that "spaghetteria" ;oP

I know, I know... most of you don't really care about soccer... but I'm Italian and since we've just won the worldcup please let me show a little bit of proud...I really HAVE TO put some pix of last night! =P

It was amazing, sooooo exciting, even if you don't like soccer you surely would have liked this! We watched the match at home and then we went to party outside!!! I'm the one with the blu shirt!!!!!

I think it's unbelieveble how a sport can make a whole nation so united, Italy was just paralized... everyone was going for the same thing! It's been very exciting!!

Oh, by the way I have to thank Tomi, Gavin and Milo because I know for sure that they've been keeping their fingers crossed for Italy!!!! =)

Summertime

Since having defended my thesis the only thing I am doing is celebrating things like (1) finishing my studies, (2) start of summer, or (3) anything else =) This gave me the idea to give you a bit of an insight into my days. Here are some pics of last Tuesday's jet ski party at a friend's place. This is held annually, and we go out to a lake to jet ski and sunbathe and then in the evening head back to his house to finish it off with a barbecue party and we drink until 6 or 7am. Last Tuesday was July 4, so we spiced up the whole thing with this American feeling, i.e. we karaoked the US national anthem when totally soaked, and we had a tiny American flag. At the same time this was the day the Germans lost a match to the Italians and we watched the match from the jacuzzi, so it was plenty of fun =)))

Hi all!

As you are all going to spend some time in Stockholm, I thought it would be nice for you to know about Swedes favourite day in the year: midsummer. We celebrate the summer solstice, but it constitutes also a sacrifice in the sign of fertility.

Even though I have been here for two years, I spent my first midsummer in Sweden some days ago, and it was really fun (ok I don't know if I will do the dance thing every year ;) ). I wil not talk about the whole history because a lot of people have been writing about it: take some time to read these two articles on Wikipedia or The Local.

I hope you will appreciate the pictures, and that you will have the opportunity to celebrate midsummer next year.
